Channel Islands self catering holidays

The Channel Islands have been a popular tourist destination for years, yet they remain largely tranquil and unaffected by tourism. They are an ideal destination for family holidays, short breaks, or just to experience their relaxed pace of life and pretty countryside. As you might expect the islands are strongly influenced by the sea, making them a haven for surfers, sandcastles and coastal walks. In fact, boat tours are one of the best ways to see the islands. Despite English being the predominant language, the Channel Islands are proudly independent with their own unique heritage. They have a genuine old-world charm and are perhaps best known for their country lanes, sea cliffs and clean beaches. There's a good range of accommodation available, much of which is pet friendly.

The islands were the only British soil to be occupied by the Nazis in the Second World War, something that features prominently in many of the museums. These days fortifications from the war still dominate the islands' clifftops and high ground. Thanks to an offshoot from the Gulf Stream, the islands enjoy a Mediterranean-type climate, with mild winters and warm summers. This gives rise to a wide array of wildflowers, seafood and wildlife.

The best time to visit the Channel Islands is probably between May and September, when the weather is warmer and the days are longer. This is also when most of the islands' festivals and events take place, so try to book your accommodation in advance or you may find there's none left! Getting to the islands by air is possible from many British airports.

There's no shortage of things to see and do on the Channel Islands: you might visit Castle Cornet on Guernsey, take a tour of Herm, go surfing off Jersey, or spot some wildlife around Alderney.

The Channel Islands are an ideal destination for family holidays or short breaks: they're relatively close to mainland Britain, having a good range of self catering cottages with plenty of countryside to enjoy. There's a good range of attractions but equally plenty of scope for relaxing and enjoying the sea views. Given their Mediterranean-type climate and the influence of the sea, you're unlikely to feel cold on the Channel Islands. The islands' numerous self catering cottages (many of them pet friendly) are popular with young couples and families wanting to escape their busy lifestyles. The charm of the Channel Islands is something special - not without good reason do many visitors return year after year.
