Situated at the mouth of the River Esk, Whitby is an ancient fishing port steeped in history. The ruin of St Hilda`s Abbey is high on Whitby`s East Cliff and looks down on narrow streets and alleyways. From the old town, the parish church of St Mary, also on East Cliff, has 199 steps leading to it and the churchyard was one of the inspirations for Bram Stoker`s Dracula.
