The town is at the mouth of the River Esk, and this old fishing port retains much character in its winding streets and hidden alleys. There is a picturesque harbour, sandy beach and the famous Whitby Abbey. Close to other seaside destinations such as Scarborough, Staithes and Robin Hood`s Bay, Whitby is also ideally placed for heading inland and exploring the countryside of the North York Moors National Park.
