Direct from the cottage is a 3 mile circular walking route which crosses over a mixture of quiet country roads and public footpaths. There are also plenty of footpaths cycle paths and bridleways nearby which lead into the heart of County Durham and the Durham Dales. You can visit the Beamish open air museum which tells the story of life in the northeast from the 1820s to the 1940s. The bustling city of Durham is just 10 miles away and is home to a magnificent cathedral the Universitys Botanic Garden and Oriental Museum and the Light Infantry Museum. Other highlights include the Tanfield Railway Auckland Castle the National Railway Museum and the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
