Morpeth is a historic market town in Northumberland, England. Two castles were built by the de Merlay family to defend the river crossing in Morpeth; the first on Haw Hill in 1095 and then Morpeth Castle in the 13th century to the south of the older castle. Remains from prehistory are scarce, but the earliest evidence of occupation found is a stone axe thought to be from the Neolithic period.
