Dumfries and Galloway holiday cottages
Dumfries and Galloway has some of the UK's best hiking routes. You can breathe sea air with a walk out to the Medieval stronghold of Caerlaverock Castle on the Nith estuary or trek to the spectacular Grey Mare's Tail waterfall in the Moffatt Hills. The biggest challenge in Southern Scotland is The Merrick, a 2,765 ft peak in the tranquil surroundings of Galloway Forest Park. There are also some more child and dog friendly paths in the 300 sq. mile park, in the form of gentle trails through the woods and fields. Galloway Forest Park is a great place to spot rare wildlife, as it provides a habitat for red deer, black grouse, wild goats and red squirrels. The county has many other wildlife attractions, such as the Red Kite Trail around Castle Douglas and the RSPB's Mersehead Reserve on the Solway Coast, where you may be lucky enough to spot barnacle geese and reed warblers.
