Highland holiday cottages
The highlands of Scotland make up more than half of Scotland's area. But with a population of just 250,000 it contains only 4% of its people. It is an area of contrasts. High mountains like Ben Nevis and valuable wilderness like the Cairngorms national park jostle with man-made attractions like the Jacobite steam train, which puffs its way up the west coast and across the spectacular Glenfinnan Viaduct. The Jacobite Steam Train hugs the coastline on its way to Mallaig, passing close to Fort William and leaving passengers breathless with views from the Glenfinnan Viaduct. Visitors can ski at Aviemore in the Cairngorms national park or take a snap at mainland Britain's most northerly point, John O'Groats.
