Lowlands Scotland holiday cottages

Lowlands holiday cottages

Perhaps the main reason people choose the Lowlands for getaways is the scenery. From the rugged terrain alongside Hadrian’s Wall on the border with England, up through the rolling Cheviot and Lammermuir hills, along the banks of the River Tweed and to the beaches of Coldingham and Port Logan, there are wonderful views to enjoy.

Whether you are planning a short break for couples or two-week family holidays, you will find there are high quality places to stay for every budget. You can choose from inns, B&Bs, holiday cottages and rural farmhouses, or for a more unusual setting, stay in a Mongolian yurt. There are dog friendly and child friendly accommodation options, so there really is something to suit everyone.

The countryside is ideal for all sorts of outdoor pursuits and you can try walking, horse riding, mountain biking and sailing, or perhaps some more leisurely pastimes, such as a farm tour. There are also over 50 golf courses in the region, including the testing links at Southerness, which boasts wonderful sea views over the Solway Firth and the excellent New Galloway Club in Castle Douglas.

The Scottish Lowlands is not just one of the most beautiful areas of the UK, it is also among the country's best destinations for family holidays. Book a stay in a holiday cottage in Dumfries and Galloway or the Scottish Borders and you can look forward to exploring stunning countryside, enjoying dramatic sea views and learning all about the region's fascinating history.

You won't have to spend all your time outside though, as there are pretty towns with lots of traditional shops, such as Peebles, Jedburgh and Kelso, to visit. There are also ruined fortresses, historic houses and formal gardens to see, including Bowhill House and Country Estate, where you can view the Duke of Buccleuch's art collection.

Kelso makes for an ideal base to explore the Borders, as it is within easy travelling distance of the beautiful Cheviots Hills and other traditional towns, including Hawick. It also has its own attractions, which include excellent golf courses, Floors Castle and the 12th-century Kelso Abbey.

If you would prefer to stay in Dumfries and Galloway, Castle Douglas is an excellent choice. The town is located on the shores of Carlingwark Loch and close to the Galloway Hills, so there are lots of activities available and a wide selection of wildlife to spot.
